Beggsboro A.F.C. Club History
The Beggsboro club hails from the Cabra area and was founded in 1939 at which time Cabra was one of Dublin’s newest Housing Developments.
The Club originally catered for Junior and Schoolboy teams, both grades being run by separate committees. Later the Schoolboy teams became associated with the local St. Brendan’s Youth Centre and played under that name but up to the present day they have retained the Beggsboro colours of Amber and Black.
An interesting story is told of the way the Beggsboro Club got its name. It seems that all of the land in the area was at one time in the Borough of Beggs and the owner of the Estate called his residence “Beggsboro”. The house is still standing on Fassaugh Road with the amber lettering on a black name plate.
Beggsboro have been members of the Athletic Union League since the club was founded. They have had considerable success down the years including being winners of Division I (Sunday) in 1959/60 and 1977/78. Division 2 (Sunday) in 1956/57. Division 2 (Saturday) in 1967/77. Saturday League Cup 1967/68. Runners up in the League Cup1976/77 and Division I (Sunday) 1976/77. Winners of the Liddy Cup 1978/79.
However perhaps their greatest glory was in winning the Bradmola Cup, forerunner for the present Glen Abbey Cup after an epic struggle against Rialto in 1960. Four games in all were played, the first three ending all square even though extra time was played. In the fourth match of the marathon, the “Boro” finished narrow winners by three goals to two again after extra time.
The Clubs president the well know Father Michael Cleary missed the first three matches but was present at the fourth game and there are some who claim the Father Michael’s presence gave the Beggsboro players a spiritual lift.
